AI and AI-Assisted Technologies Policy

The Journal of Indonesian Comparative of Syari'ah Law (JICL) recognizes that generative artificial intelligence (AI) and AI-assisted technologies are increasingly used in scholarly communication. This policy has been developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles of publication ethics, including the guidance of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), to ensure transparency, accountability, academic integrity, and responsible use of AI throughout the publication process.

For the purposes of this policy, generative AI includes technologies capable of producing text, images, code, audio, or other content based on user prompts, including but not limited to ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Microsoft Copilot, and similar large language models or AI-assisted systems.

For Authors

Authors may use AI-assisted technologies only as tools to improve the readability, grammar, language, formatting, or organization of their manuscripts. AI tools must not replace the authors' own intellectual contributions, scientific reasoning, legal analysis, interpretation, or academic judgment.

Authors remain fully responsible and accountable for the originality, accuracy, integrity, and validity of all submitted content, including any material that has been generated or modified using AI-assisted technologies.

Where AI tools have been used, authors must disclose:

  • the name of the AI tool;
  • the version (if available);
  • the purpose for which it was used;
  • the extent of its use.

Such disclosure should appear in an Acknowledgements section or in another appropriate section designated by the journal.

AI systems must not be listed as authors or co-authors because they cannot assume responsibility, accountability, or intellectual ownership of scholarly work.

Authors must ensure that confidential information, copyrighted materials, personal data, or unpublished research belonging to third parties are not uploaded to AI systems where confidentiality cannot be guaranteed.

AI-generated images, figures, artwork, graphical abstracts, or visual materials are not permitted unless they constitute an integral part of the research methodology and are fully disclosed and scientifically justified.

For Reviewers

All manuscripts received for peer review are confidential documents.

Reviewers must not upload submitted manuscripts or any portion thereof into publicly available AI systems or AI-assisted technologies that may retain, store, or learn from submitted content.

AI must not be used to generate, draft, rewrite, or substantially modify peer-review reports.

Reviewers remain personally responsible for the accuracy, fairness, confidentiality, and scholarly quality of their evaluations.

Where reviewers suspect undisclosed or inappropriate use of AI, they should promptly notify the handling editor.

For Editors

Editors shall maintain the confidentiality of all manuscripts and editorial communications.

Editors must not upload confidential manuscripts or editorial correspondence into AI systems whose data processing practices cannot guarantee confidentiality.

Editorial assessment, peer-review management, ethical evaluation, and publication decisions shall always remain under human responsibility and shall not be delegated to AI systems.

Where editors identify suspected misuse of AI or undisclosed AI-generated content, they shall investigate the matter in accordance with the journal's Publication Ethics Policy and the guidance of COPE.

Disclosure and Compliance

Failure to disclose the use of AI where required, or misuse of AI resulting in plagiarism, fabricated information, inaccurate citations, manipulated images, or other forms of publication misconduct, may result in editorial action, including requests for revision, rejection of the manuscript, publication of corrections, or retraction of the published article, depending on the seriousness of the case.
